Jeffrey Louis Starr

February 20, 1964, was the birth date of Jeffrey Louis Starr, an American child actor, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He gained fame as a kid actor for his role as catcher Mike Engleberg in two of the popular sequels of the blockbuster 1970s movie series "The Bad News Bears" titled "The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training" (1977) and "The Bad News Bears Go to Japan" (1978). 

Starr replaced the original Gary Lee Cavagnaro for the sequels and became renowned for his portrayal of a hard-hitting but chubby and out-of-shape baseball player who was lovable. Other than his childhood as an actor, Starr lived out the rest of his life as devoted community and family man until he passed away on July 25, 2025, at age 61 in Carbondale, Illinois. He is also remembered as much for his film successes as for his gentle, compassionate nature.

Acting Career 

Jeffrey Louis Starr is best known for playing catcher Mike Engleberg in the sequels to the 1976 movie "The Bad News Bears." These were "The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training" (1977) and "The Bad News Bears Go to Japan" (1978). Replacing Gary Lee Cavagnaro, Starr contributed to keeping the franchise in business with his memorable character performances. Although these sequels were his sole credited performances, he also played an uncredited extra in some other movies later in his life.
